Leadership
Jay Thomas, Founder/CEO/Senior Consultant
Mr. Thomas earned his MBA from Ball State University and has over 30 years working in multiple roles in the trucking industry. In his earlier years Thomas worked as a company driver, later purchasing his own truck becoming an Independent Contractor. Thomas went on to purchase 9 more trucks and started his own trucking company. Thomas quickly determined that most of his problems were the same problems plaguing larger carriers except he did not have the large carrier resources.
After 10 years Thomas sold his fleet so he could learn all aspects of the industry from inside a larger carrier. Thomas started in operations and held positions as a customer service rep, load planner, and driver manager. Later Thomas was a driver recruiter, developed and opened a training school and later advanced to the Director of Recruiting. While working as the director of recruiting Thome began taking courses to become certified in safety. Later Thomas became certified in DOT safety and compliance and became a Safety manager and then VP of Safety and Risk Management.
During this time Thomas began to identify solutions which he would later develop to provide smaller fleets.
In 2001 Thomas founded National Transportation Safety Solutions LLC. Over the next 23 years NTS Solutions has worked with motor carriers of all sizes, setting up Recruiting, Safety, Claims, and HR departments, processes, procedures, and handbooks.
Thomas quickly identified that several fleet owners lacked the general knowledge of operating a motor carrier. Over the couple years Thomas began writing educational curriculum in order that he could offer the courses to his clients.
In 2010 Thomas completed the Transportation and Logistics curriculum and he presented his program to Joliet Jr College adult education program. After several reiterations the curriculum was approved by the Illinois Board of Education, and classes began being offered in the fall of 2011. Thomas initially was the adjunct professor for the classes from 2011 through 2014 but is now being taught by one of our consultants.
In 2020 Thomas realized that most smaller motor carriers cannot afford to employ experienced safety professionals and often use entry level administrative personnel.
However, the majority of the over 1 million active motor carriers have less than 100 trucks. Thomas believes this should have been a clear problem for state and federal regulators to see.
As a result, NTS Solutions developed their Outsourced Safety Program. This program provides small to medium-sized carriers the ability to have a fully experienced and staffed safety department at the cost of 1-2 entry level employees. In 2023 the outsourced program has expanded to include Recruiting, Driver On-boarding & Training, Risk Management, and HR.
NTS Solutions has helped several motor carriers pass their New Entrant Audit with flying colors.
Thomas has recorded, edited, and produced over 200 safety training videos with custom content specific to the carriers and their training needs.
He also has developed Software and Apps to help drivers and motor carriers help streamline their job while maintaining a higher level of security and compliance.
Thomas has extensive experience in FMCSA compliance reviews, Driver Recruiting, Human Resources, Claims Management, Litigation Management, Truck Operations, and Maintenance.
Thomas has been a 30(b)(6) company representative in hundreds of legal matters representing the defense for the carriers. He also has extensive experience handling crash litigation defense in conjunction with the carrier’s insurance and legal counsel.
Thomas has a passion for safety and has dedicated his life to trying to make the roadways safer.
In 2016 Thomas was voted the Kentucky Trucking Association Safety Chairman. Thomas was awarded the Colorado Safety Professional of the Year in 2019. He is a member of several state and national Trucking Associations and has been a part of the Truck Driving Championships for over 18 years.
Thomas was voted Alignable’s 2024 Local Business Person of the Year.
One of Thomas’s Pet Peeves: He hates consultants who have never performed the role. Which is the majority of them!
NTS Solutions realizes and understands that an effective consultant must have experience performing the roles which he/she is consulting.
This is what sets NTS Solutions apart from most other consulting firms.
NTS Solutions only hire experienced and qualified transportation personnel. Then during the screening process they must pass a series of training and examinations. Once the applicant has successfully passed the entrance exams and training, those employees must complete a 6-month internship learning how to effectively apply their knowledge in a teaching, consulting, and TPA environment.
Rest assured that if NTSS is going to represent you to the FMCSA in the event of an audit, we are going to make sure our staff knows their STUFF.
